Case Study · B2B Platform

Topo Element

Topo Element supplies professional surveying, construction-layout and 3D-scanning equipment (Topcon, Sokkia, FARO) to land surveyors, contractors and engineers across Southern California, alongside demos, rentals, training, repair and calibration. We designed the site as a B2B sales and support platform rather than an equipment catalogue, organised around the work customers do.

Topo Element

01 The challenge

Topo Element sells professional surveying, construction and 3D-scanning equipment from brands like Topcon, Sokkia and FARO to very different audiences — land surveyors, general contractors, civil and MEP engineers, layout crews and reality-capture professionals — each with their own requirements. A surveyor wants GNSS or total stations; a contractor wants layout tools, lasers or scanners.

The task was to make a technically complex portfolio feel simple, answering three questions fast: what do you need to accomplish, which equipment is right for the job, and how can Topo Element help you choose and use it.

The strategy

Four principles: product discovery that is easy to browse and understand; industry-based navigation so visitors start from the work they do, not from product categories; lead generation that turns interest into demos, rentals and consultations; and ongoing support that positions the company as a long-term technical partner, not just a supplier.

02 The solution

Designed as a B2B sales and support platform rather than an equipment catalogue — connecting customer need → equipment → expert guidance.

Discovery by industry and workflow

The homepage leads with the core positioning — construction layout, land survey, topography — and a small set of featured products (FARO scanners, Topcon total stations, digital layout, GNSS) rather than a wall of catalogue. Navigation is organised around the work customers do — Building Construction, Land Survey, 3D Scanning — so someone can start from their profession instead of a product name.

Product pages for technical buyers

Equipment pages carry what a professional actually needs to evaluate — imagery, technical specifications, accuracy figures, features, applications, benefits, catalogue resources and related equipment — each with a direct path to the sales team. The Total Stations section, for example, presents the Topcon GT and MS with full performance detail.

A consultative sales journey

The business does not run on direct checkout, so the primary path is discover → learn → request demo → consult → purchase. The multi-step Request a Demo form collects customer and company details, professional category, products of interest, preferred date and project notes, so the sales team walks in informed.

Rentals as their own journey

Rental customers have different needs, so rentals are a dedicated experience, not a secondary product tag. The section explains the case for renting — lower upfront cost, flexible periods, access to specialised kit, maintenance and training — across categories from FARO scanners and robotic total stations to GPS receivers, lasers, auto levels and locators, with its own inquiry form.

After the sale: service, training and support

  • Service, repair and precision calibration for total stations, GNSS/RTK receivers, data collectors, levels and construction lasers — with same-day service on selected repairs and local pickup and delivery
  • Equipment-specific training on setup, data collection, error checking, site measurement, topographic mapping and construction staking
  • A software knowledge centre with instructional videos covering layout, resection, DWG import, point creation and measurement, offsets, exporting and field-to-office workflows

Certified pre-owned

A dedicated Certified Pre-Owned section extends the range beyond new equipment, with inspection, cleaning, testing and condition details on every listing — another entry point for buyers working to a budget.

Content and SEO architecture

Layered content for organic visibility: product pages and categories, industry pages, service and rental content, training, software support, certified pre-owned, location information and a technical blog on robotic total stations, surveying workflows, equipment care and construction productivity — a scalable base for ongoing publishing.

Contact routed to the right person

Topo Element has specialised sales contacts by territory and equipment category, so the contact experience routes visitors to the right representative — Land Survey and 3D Scanning, Construction Layout, supplies — with dedicated Anaheim and San Marcos locations rather than one generic form. Messaging throughout emphasises precision, reliability, field experience and help before, during and after the sale.

03 Results

  • The platform connects products to professional applications, then to demonstrations, rentals, training, service, calibration and technical support — a digital ecosystem around the full customer lifecycle, not a product list
  • Multiple conversion paths — demo, rental, service, contact — instead of one generic form, with each form qualifying the lead before the sales conversation
  • Visitors browse equipment by their profession and application rather than needing to know product categories first
  • Topo Element reads as a technical partner, not a reseller, with support positioned before, during and after purchase
  • A content architecture — products, services, industries, training, blog — that scales as the range and locations grow

Distinct journeys for each customer type: new equipment (industry → solution → product → demo → consultation), rental (need → category → inquiry → confirmation), existing customer (support → training → software → service) and pre-owned buyer (certified equipment → product → condition → enquiry). The result is a sales platform, education centre and support hub in one.
